In March 2025, the DRI supported the Declaration for Culture in the UN Pact for the Future. The objective of the Declaration and the related campaign is to ensure that culture is appropriately included and reflected in the highest level global goals of the United Nations.
The recently adopted Pact for the Future gives the United Nations, and everyone who works alongside them, a new reference point. A little over half-way through the period of operation of the 2030 Agenda – and with progress significantly off-track – the Pact aims to accelerate the ability of the international system to realize its potential and achieve its goals for ensuring a sustainable and resilient future for the global community. This objective is shared by the Culture2030Goal campaign. Our focus on ensuring the integration of the arts, culture and heritage into policy-making is motivated by a conviction that this is essential to building a better world and better lives.
In April 2020 the campaign initiated the development of a strategic framework within the context of the UN Decade of Action. In this, we define:
- Our Vision: The recognition of culture as the fourth pillar of sustainable development;
- Our Mission: To mainstream culture across the global development agenda;
- Our Values/Beliefs: are rooted in the #culture2015goal Manifesto of 2014 and the #CultureCOVID19 Statement of 2020;
Our Goals include:
- A stronger place for culture throughout the implementation of the current global development agenda (the UN 2030 Agenda),
- The adoption of culture as a distinct goal in the post-2030 development agenda,
- The adoption of a global agenda for culture.
